UNDERSTANDING DEMENTIA
DEMENTIA is not part of normal aging, although as a person ages, the risk of dementia increases.
DEMENTIA is not a specific disease, but an overall term used to describe a set of symptoms involved in the decline of mental ability.

DEMENTIA is progressive and occurs because there is degeneration of brain function, which eventually affects daily activities such as work, hobbies, shopping, cooking, grooming, eating and toileting.

*Dementia occuring in patients under the age of 65 years are considered Yong Onset Dementia (YOD).

10 COMMON SYMPTOMS OF DEMENTIA
  • Recent memory loss that affects job performance
  • Difficulty performing familiar tasks
  • Problems with language
  • Disorientation to time and place
  • Poor or decreased judgement
  • Problems with abstract thinking
  • Misplacing things
  • Changes in personality
  • Loss of initiative
  • Behavioral changes

CAUSES OF DEMENTIA

ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE (AD) - AD is the most common type and cause of Dementia. AD is caused by high levels of certain proteins inside and outside brain cells, making it hard for these brain cells to stay healthy. The hippocampus - center of learning and memory is often the first to be damaged. This is why memory loss is often one of the earliest symptoms of AD.

VASCULAR DEMENTIA (VaD): STROKE CAUSING DEMENTIA - VaD is the second most common form of Dementia. It may be preventable, therefore early detection and diagnoses is important. VaD is caused by reduced supply of oxygen to the brain, from the narrowing or blockage of blood vessels. It may occur after one large stroke, or a series of mini strokes.

FRONTOTEMPORAL DEMENTIA (FTD) - FTD is caused by abnormal proteins that form inside nerve cells int he front and side parts of the brain. Early symptoms include changes in personality, behavior and difficulty with language.

LEWY BODY DEMENTIA (LBD) - LBD is a form of progressive dementia. Early symptoms include fluctuating alertness, difficulties with judging distances and hallucinations.
MIXED DEMENTIA - Displays symptoms of both Alcheimer's disease and Vascular Dementia.

Dr. Alvin Rae Cenina, Head, Memory Wellness Program explaining about Dementia
Dementia  is an umbrella term describing  variety of diseases and conditions that develop when nerve cells in the brain (called neutrons) die or no longer function normally.

The death or malfunction of neutrons causes changes in one's memory, behavior and ability to think clearly.

Dementia is NOT part of normal aging.
36 million people around the world are estimated to have dementia.
One in nine people aged 65 and older has dementia.
